History: Space Services Inc. of America

In 1982, Space Services Inc. of America, under the direction of legendary astronaut Donald K. “Deke” Slayton, conducted the first ever privately financed launch into outer space. The Conestoga 1 mission garnered global acclaim and created the technical, financial, and legal/regulatory foundation for the commercial space industry of today.

In 1986, SSI launched Starfire 1, the first time NASA purchased launch services from a private company.

Celestis

In 1997, Celestis, Inc. a subsidiary of Space Services, Inc. conducted the world’s first Memorial Spaceflight – the Founders Flight, sending a symbolic portion of the cremated remains of Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry, 60’s icon Timothy Leary, and 22 others into Earth orbit. To date, Celestis has conducted eight Memorial Spaceflight missions to outer space, Earth orbit, and to the Moon.

In 1999, an international team led by SSI CEO Charles M. Chafer broadcast over 100,000 messages from people all over the world to five star systems.

In 1999, at NASA’s request we sent a symbolic portion of Dr. Eugene Shoemaker’s cremated remains to the moon aboard the Lunar Prospector mission, making him the first person “buried on the moon.”

In 2001, working with Nescafe Japan, we delivered 10,000 star messages to the International Space Station – launched on a Russian Progress rocket.

In 2003 we introduced our Name A Star Live product line and launched our Spaceborne Archives (containing the star information and messages from all Name A Star Live customers) in 2008 and 2009.
